In contrast, the New Zealanders had been phenomenal in the entire tournament. Their very first game resulted in the absolute humbling of homeside India who were handed a taste of their own medicine with the spinners. New Zealand followed that up with a convincing target defense against fierce rivals Australia. They then scored a mighty total against Pakistan in Tuesday’s meeting, a target which was well defended in the end. In their final game too they were outstanding and ended up storming to the semifinals with a stunning 75 run win over the downed Bangladeshis.
Kane Williamson won the toss and put his side to bat first on what turned out to be one hell of a scruffy pitch. There was no bounce whatsover and the ball was turning, which meant a good first innings score could very well knock Bangladesh out of the equation.
However, something dramatic happened before the game, which caught the eye of the crowd. Bangladesh’s skipper Mashrafe Murtaza questioned the decision of the match referee after losing the coin. Watch that in this video. Murtaza asks the umpire whether he is telling the truth about the toss.
